DESIGN THAT MATTERS | MULTICULTURAL MEMENTO
SOCIAAL DESIGN | www.gabrielabustamante.com  | www.tokissornottokiss.com

By adding new multicultural kissing couples to the original one, I want to continue the adaptation process of this souvenir by narrating actual valuable aspects of Dutch Culture. This intervention may provide an arena for reflection and dialogue about the relationship between location, ethnicity, identity, culture and their representation. Could every tourist recognize today’s Dutch Kissing Couple?

Does every Dutch citizen identify with it?

“To Kiss or not to Kiss” is a project where I explore the
actualization of local souvenirs by searching for new depictions of
what is ‘authentic’ and ‘representative’
of the Netherlands as a multicultural and diverse society.

Pic HHS w666About Me: I am: Observant, Reflective and Wise. Involved, Caring and Perfectionist.
Enthusiastic, Unexpected and sometimes Funny.

About what I do: Currently I work as a Design teacher at the The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Next to tutoring in other design courses, I coordinate the ‘Prototyping & Craftsmanship’ semester of the ‘Industrial Design Engineering / Open Innovator’ international program. As an independent designer, ‘craftsmanship’ is the context in which I prefer to create design opportunities that contribute to society.

About My Approach: I work with a reflective, hands-on approach, in which ‘slowness’ is a good thing, yet tangible results are always the outcome. I prefer to involve people in the design process: to share knowledge, to jointly explore and learn.
