VAN TJALLE&JASPER I Tjalle Niehof en Jasper Kuijl

www.van-tjalle-en-jasper.nl

Year of birth Tjalle: 1982
Year of birth Jasper: 1981

Why Generation Y? "Tjalle and Jasper exhibit a beautiful book shelf, lamps that light up the cold winter days and a side table that tries to step out if its own shadow. These two gentleman create typical Dutch Design: sleek design with a wink, created by their own 'VIPC©'-checklist. Like a true Generation Y'er should, Tjalle and Jasper created their job out of their hobby and just do what they like the most: designing furniture."

VAN TJALLE&JASPER love designing and making furniture, it's always on their mind. But they like to do it their own way, they go against the mainstream or current trends. But there are certain things they do find important. That is why all of their work must comply to their "Very Important Points Company Checklist©". Because of their self-developed "VIPC©"-checklist all of the products meet the same high quality-standard. This is how they keep the designs fresh and shows you if you are dealing with one of their designs.

"Very Important Points Company Checklist©" VAN TJALLE&JASPER

  1. Is it functional and beautiful? Yes/No
  2. Does it combine the traditional with the industrial? Yes/No
  3. Is it modern but not boring? Yes/No
  4. Is it ethically correct? Yes/No
  5. Does it hit the point? Yes/No

Did you end up with five yes's?
Then chances are you are dealing with an original VAN TJALLE&JASPER.

Tjalle and Jasper grew up in the same little village in the south of the Netherlands and have been friends ever since they were little kids. In the last couple of years they followed their own paths in work and studies. Tjalle is an industrial designer and Jasper has been working as a professional wood-craftsman making furniture. In the spring of 2012 they decided to design and make some pieces of furniture. They felt and noticed they could fuel each other's creativity and things grew into what they are now.

For the exhibition 'Generation Y?' we have marked you with the label Generation Y. What do you think about this?

Tjalle: We are undeniably part of Generation Y because we are both born within the right time-frame. Our personality and perspective on life is determined mainly by society, which does not mean that Generation Y shares the same believes or ideas. The label is correct but the stigmas that come with the label are not shared by everyone of Generation Y. As a designer I am often the exception which proves the rule. I feel creativity is increased by looking at things in a different way.
Jasper: When I read the description of my generation I definitely feel a strong sense of recognition. The exception is the characteristic job-hopping, it's my greatest ambition to be involved in a company or project that can grow, something on which I can really focus myself.

What are your work characteristics that are typical Generation Y?

Tjalle: One of the characteristics of Generation Y in the western world is that making money is less important than the satisfaction we get from creating things. I think our work shows just that vision.
We feel that our work can be considered a success when form and function come together. This shows our goal orientated mindset.
Jasper: The methods of designing and manufacturing we use are really of this time and age. All our pieces are first modeled in a 3D computer environment, during production we frequently use CAM (computer aided manufacturing). Our product sales mostly go through the web. These are good examples of our use of technology and the online oriented nature of our generation.
