A hundred artists and affiliated companies are located on a surface of approximately 9000 m2. A great diversity of creative professions as well as crafts are represented in 'Nieuw en Meer'. Almost every discipline within the expressive and applied arts and various crafts are represented; from architecture and sculpturing to steel contructions and singing.
The Cruquius Museum
The Cruquius is a former steam pumping station with an original and unique steam engine from 1849. The museum tells the history of reclaimed land, polders and drainage and features an exhibition of water management in the Netherlands.
The Sloten Windmill & Coopery Museum
The Sloten Windmill is a reconstructed, working mill from 1847 and it also houses the Coopery Museum.
The Sloten Windmill is a tower mill, with an octagon from 1847. It is the only mill in Amsterdam that is accessible to the public. The mill lies on the outskirts of Amsterdam, at the ring canal and sees to it that the water level in the lower lying surroundings remains below a specific level.
The Sloten Windmill also houses the Coopery Museum. This museum is unique in the Netherlands as it is the only place where coopery crafts can still be seen. Wooden casks were used for packing, transport and storage of products such as salted fish, meat, cheese, beer and onions. Wine and cognac are nowadays the best known examples for which wooden casks are still used.
Nature & Recreation
Slotervaart is known as the 'green district' of Amsterdam. The green of the parks and recreational areas offer you a broad spectrum of opportunities for relaxation, sport activities and nature watching.
Nature & recreational area 'De Oeverlanden'
The 'Oeverlanden' is a nature and recreational area located on the north side of the 'Nieuwe Meer'.
The 'Oeverlanden' offers you the possibility to walk or cycle through beautiful nature, to sunbath and play on the beach or the sunbathing area, to play basketball and skate or even take the ferry-boat to the Amsterdam forest. The nature area is situated to the east of 'Anderlechtlaan', and the recreational area is situated between the 'Anderlechtlaan' and the 'Ringvaart' of 'Haarlemmermeer'.
The Siegerpark is located between the highway A4 and the living area 'Nieuw Sloten'. It is a beautiful park consisting of lakes in a peat bog area, with a collection of old, special trees. It is an ideal park for nature and art lovers. The park has a special native and exotic vegetation, and currently houses several statues on loan by the 'Stedelijk Museum'.
Siegerpark was laid out at the end of the thirties as a private idyllic spot and was later used as an experimental garden by the University of Amsterdam. The park is now property of the district Slotervaart and is part of the ecological structure in the district. The banks of the water areas in the park have recently been ecologically arranged and a large part of the green is naturally managed and cared for.
Sloterpark is the largest park of Amsterdam. It has a surface of 91 hectare and is situated around Sloterplas. The park offers possibilities for watersports such as sailing, surfing and canoeing, and inline skating.
On the westside of Sloterplas, you will find Sloterparkbad. This is one of the largest swimming accommodations in the Netherlands. It contains many different pools, amongst which a recreational pool with a slide, rapids, bubblebaths, steam cabins, herbal baths and a solarium.
Rembrandtpark is a lovely place for a stroll and a breath of fresh air, but also for sport activities.
For the children, there is a children's farm and a play ground. Several spots in the park are ideal for a game of soccer. The northern part of the park, with several play- and sunbathing areas, is a beautiful recreational area in the summer time. Rembrandtpark is located on the east side of district Slotervaart, bordering district De Baarsjes. It can be reached by bike, by tram and by bus.
